Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

In our life, we face various kinds of situations. We can’t say we are happy all time irrespective of our situation. Sometimes we undergo troubles, face trials and tribulations.

But I would like you to remind that whoever has accepted Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior, will be least troubled or dismayed. Because we have His word say,

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4)

This is our promise verse for march.

Rod and Staff

Basically, rod and staffs are used by shepherd as they overlook their flocks. Sometimes they use it to save their flock’s life from wolf, fox, lion or whichever wild beasts that may come to scatter them.

Who is our Shepherd?

“I(Lord Jesus Christ) am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)

Yes, Jesus Christ is our shepherd. He leads us, feeds us, also comforts us.

Today, let us see three types of staffs he holds in His hands.

The Staff of Favor:

So I shepherded the flock marked for slaughter, particularly the oppressed of the flock. Then I took two staffs and called one Favor and the other Union, and I shepherded the flock. (Zechariah 11:7)

Favor” is an act of kindness beyond what is due or usual. God irrespective of our human nature still loves us and cares for us. That is how he had overlooked Israelites troubles on Egypt. He lead them out of egypt and nourished them on the way to Israel, a promised land. They were favored before the eyes of God.

Year of Favor:

God says, “I will send you such a blessing in the sixth year that the land will yield enough for three years.” (Leviticus 25:21)

God commanded Moses to say to Israelites that for six years you shall sow and reap but at the seventh year you shall not do any work and you should celebrate the year of Jubliee. For blessings of sixth year will be plenty and it will be sufficient for next three years. Isn’t it great? Just like God rested on seventh day after creating all things, same way He wants us to rest on seventh year without doing any work but worship God for his marvellous works.

Now we, who all are not israelites by birth but by faith is eligible for this blessing. For we have his promise

Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God – John 1 : 12

Through Jesus Christ we have become Sons of God.

Jesus Christ while preaching at the temple said, God has sent Him to proclaim the year of Lord’s favor. (Luke 4:19)

The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. Isaiah 61 : 1, 2a.

Like it has been prophesied in the book of Isaiah 61, Jesus Christ is the chosen Son of God and we, by believing him and accepting him as our personal saviour are now favored before eyes of God.

The Rod of Justice:

Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. (Psalm 45:7)

Our God is God of Just. He helps the oppressed people and judges people who oppresses the weak. Like he judged Pharaoh who plotted evil against Israelites. He killed all the male child, and God judged him by destroying all the first born of the Egyptians. Also being destroying them, God also strucked Pharaoh and egyptians with plagues.

“You are just in these judgements, O Holy One, for You who are and who were; for they have shed the blood of Your holy people and your prophets, and You have given them blood to drink as they deserve.” (Revelation 16:5,6)

We are in end times. God is going to judge the wrongdoer and evil ones. God is very much concerned about us, to judge all those who raise against His children. Those who oppress us, those who devise evil against us will all face God’s judgement for He has the Rod of Justice in His hand.

I would also like to emphasize that it is going to be Lord Jesus Christ who is going to judge people according to their deeds.

About the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.” – Hebrews 1 : 8

Yes, during his first coming Jesus Christ came to this world demonstrating the Love of God. But during his second coming, he is going to be the Ultimate Judge.

Staff of Oneness:

‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph –which is in Ephraim’s hand-and of the Israelite tribes associated with him, and join it to Judah’s stick. I will make them into a single stick of wood, and they will become one in my hand.’ (Ezekiel 37:19)

This is the work of the Holy Spirit who unites us with God. His (Lord Jesus Christ) purpose was to create in Himself one new humanity out of the two, whether Israelites or Gentiles.

God has the Staff of Oneness in his hands to make all the believers one in heart and mind. (Acts 4:32)

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all in all. (Ephesians 4:4,5)

God unites us through Holy Spirit who believes Him by the Staff of Oneness in His hand.

Apostolic Teaching

We saw the work of God through staff. During the crucifixion this staff was given to Jesus Christ.

They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him, and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on His head. They put a staff in His right hand. Then they knelt in front of Him and mocked Him. “Hail, king of Jews!” they said. (Matthew 27:28,29)

This particular incident is a prophecy, prophesied in the book of Micah that he(Christ) will be beaten up by staff.

They will strike Israel’s ruler on the cheek with a rod.(Micah 5:1)

Jesus Christ being God, did nothing but accepted the sufferings to save mankind from sin. He redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.
It is not soldiers who persecuted Jesus Christ, but also we, by our sinful and arrogant deeds, persecute Jesus every day.

How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? (Hebrews 10:29)

Let us turn our minds from evil and sinful nature.

Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. – Hebrews 12 : 1, 2

Jesus has the rod and staff in His Hands to give us His Favor, to give us His Justice, and the Staff of Oneness to bless us.

God Bless!
